Hiya!!
Well it’s a brand new year… and it looks like a year of interesting possibilities.
I mean… what with the financial melt down of the Euro, the US, a new carbon dioxide tax and to top it off maybe the end of the world according to the Mayans.
So what the heck… let’s make hay while the sun shines??
Each month I’m going to say thank you to my fabulous clients and copy writers, coz without you, I couldn’t be sitting here in my little studio voicing a myriad of scripts for radio, tv, documentaries, e-learning, web pages etc…
I love it.
So.. take a squizz back here regularly to check the latest promotion.

The Great Don La Fontaine
As a Voiceover Artist, it’s impossible to not revere the brilliant late great Don LaFontaine. He was a ‘God’ amongst those of us who live behind the mic. He was also very approachable…and gave advice freely, helping those who asked.
In one of my earlier posts, I mentioned Voiceover Universe I thoroughly recommend this site to all VO talent. But if you haven’t joined yet, here’s some answers Don LaFontaine gave to a new member.
“Whatever works for you. You seem to be too preoccupied with the pitch and quality of your voice. I repeat – it’s the quality of the READ that counts. You don’t need to sound like anybody else.
If your voice gets higher when you project – so be it. It’s no big deal. Forget our voice. Concentrate on the read. That’s what will set you apart.

Here’s a few things to add to your read – Try adding emphasis, or colour to a word.. play with it.
Speed it up
Slow it down
Pitch it higher
Pitch it lower
Make it louder
Make it softer
There’s just a few ideas for you to practice and play with… mostly, just have fun!
It’s the Ekka you Swine
Well it’s August, and August in Brisbane means Ekka!! Okay… so what’s Ekka? It’s an abbreviation of Exhibition.. or in other words.. it’s our SHOW time. Ferris wheels, fairy floss, lost kids, and show bags. Fun!
August is also the season for westerlies… it’s an extremely lazy wind, it just goes straight through you.. and it carries lots of colds, flu’s, coughs and this year little piggies, or better known as swine flu.
So, *sigh* I won’t be going to the Ekka. I will admire it from afar.
Why… coz the chance of picking up one of these little piggies is pretty high, and when I do.. it’s costs me work. For a freelance Voice Over Artist… ummm…. that’s not good!
In fact… the real porky pigs, won’t be at the Ekka either.. just in case they pick up the swine flu from the two legged variety. lol.. go figure!!
So..if you’re in the same boat and can’t afford to get sick.. here’s a few tips to get over it faster. Naturally.
Ask your chemist for a nasal squirt bottle… not just a squirty spray.. but a full on “squeeze the whole bottle and squirt a salty Niagara falls vertically UP your nose”. Do this several times a day.
Gotta warn you it’s pretty gross… but it works! Oh… make sure you do it over a sink.
Get some sea salt crystals… (one’s you would pop into a grinder) and slowly suck on one. Tuck it into the side of your cheek and let it dissolve. Salt is a natural healer.
Drink lots and lots of fresh water.
Go for a brisk walk in the sunshine .. don’t forget the tissues, it’s guaranteed to make your nose run even more.. but that’s good get the sickness OUT of your body.
And last but not least… be nice to yourself.
And then I was going to suggest chicken soup… but the chickens have been a bit dodgy too.
So.. a stiff drink… a good movie…and some chocolate.. can’t hurt eh??
